This is a film about the trajectory of weight training—from circus acts and “strength exhibitions” in the early 1900s to a much more refined biomechanical strategy that optimizes muscular development with minimal wasted effort. For nearly a century, “resistance exercise” was focused mostly on lifting heavy weights—“the heavier, the better.” That was the philosophy to which 14-year-old Doug Brignole was introduced in the mid-1970s. However, throughout the following four decades of his training for bodybuilding competitions, he progressively realized the foolishness of that strategy—that there is no direct correlation between how much weight is lifted, and how much a particular muscle is loaded—and the inefficiency of most traditional resistance exercises.
